San Antonio Public Library's Jean Brady Advocates for Sustainable Funding
In October, Jean Brady, Board Chair of the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) (TX) and recipient of the Urban Libraries Council's (ULC) 2009 Urban Player Award, spent an afternoon celebrating the opening of a new branch of SAPL, Molly Pruitt Public Library. Located in the city’s newly renovated Roosevelt High School, the Pruitt Library, named for a former library board member, opens when the school day is done, providing San Antonio youth with a safe place to study and socialize during non-school hours. The high school benefits from the nearly 10,000 new items added to its collection, while the Library enjoys an expansion of its service to a traditionally underserved area of the city. Read More

Recently I had the good fortune to be an invited guest at a gathering of public library leaders at the District of Columbia Public Library (DC). Directors and others from the Maryland and Virginia sides of the Potomac came together in Washington with their host, ULC Executive Board member Ginnie Cooper, and members of her staff. IMLS Calls for 2010 National Leadership Grant Applications
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) (DC) is calling for applications for its 2010 National Leadership Grants (NLG). This grant program will support library projects that pursue innovative research and demonstration projects, digital resource development, and library-museum collaborations. Grant amounts range from $50,000 to $1,000,000. Planning grants are also available and range from $50,000 to $100,000. The deadline is Monday, February 1, 2010. Read More
