#ICTBC - Live Facebook Book Club

Wichita Public Library, Kan.

Education - Children & Adults

Innovation Synopsis

Every month a new book discussion led by library staff occurs via Facebook Live, hosted on the library’s Facebook page. People join the book discussion by watching and are invited to contribute to the conversation by commenting in the post, creating a live conversation with the hosting staff.

Challenge/Opportunity

This new type of book club creates a couple of unique opportunities for readers. Utilizing the Facebook social media channel, people can join from any location on their PC or mobile device and so are not impeded by travel restrictions. The live book discussion occurs over the lunch hour and is also available to watch after the live event.

Key Elements of Innovation

Creating a new type of online book club, the library is fostering the growing perception of libraries being a place of progressive and innovative opportunities. This is also a new and innovative way to further promote the importance of leisure reading for adults and to provide a literary experience during people’s time spent on social media sites. Facebook’s Insights allow us to track reach and user experience. It’s the book club for the 21st century.

Achieved Outcomes

As this Facebook Live video presentation allows people to watch and participate in a book discussion in a whole new way, we anticipate that it reaches those who want to join in on a book discussion but are unable to or uninterested in doing so in the traditional way or setting. While the majority of attendees of in-person book clubs are retirees, the largest demographic for this book club is in the 25-44 age range.
