El Paso Public Library, Texas
Innovation Synopsis
The "Adult Literacy and Education Center" at EPPL is a one-stop shop for literacy resources in El Paso. It serves as a clearing house for information on city-wide literacy resources and provides direct training and educational opportunities for thousands of El Pasoans.
Challenge/Opportunity
This innovative approach to adult basic education walks students through the library adult learners Pyramid to Success from basic instruction in ESL, GED, technology and health literacy all the way through formal academic instruction and entrepreneurial skills. It solves the problem of having to go to many different places to look for educational resources that may not be suitable for the individual. With one-stop service, adult learners can get information they need at one location.
Key Elements of Innovation
The library utilizes in house resources such as Career Online High School through Gale Cengage, GED testing sites at seven of its 12 branches, a mobile classroom that brings literacy resources to hard to reach locations, professional instructors in ESL, GED and technology and community partnerships. These resources help to position the library as a destination for adult learners and as a leader in economic advancement and personal development.
Achieved Outcomes
The outcome of the program will be to improve the economic development and quality of life of El Pasoans and to attract adult learners back to the library. Already, the library has graduated four students from their online high school program with at least 13 more slated to graduate by mid-2018. More than 500 GED students have tested through the library’s testing centers and thousands of local residents have become citizens utilizing library resources.
