How ULC Members are Exploring Artificial Intelligence at the Library
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping our world, and public libraries across the U.S. are stepping up to provide accessible education on this transformative technology. As part of ULC’s partnership with the University at Albany’s Center for Technology in Government (CTG UAlbany), we recently published a new report and interactive map that offers an overview of the current AI-related programs and services in public libraries across the United States.
Several ULC member libraries are highlighted in this collection of best practices, and their programs demonstrate how libraries have become key hubs for AI learning. Continue reading for a selection of examples from ULC members.
“[The report] delineates the purpose and diversity of AI initiatives undertaken by these libraries, showcasing the breadth of programs offered and their intended objectives. The report shows that public libraries are mainly involved in 1) increasing awareness about AI and 2) developing non-technical and technical competencies through various activities.”

Conversations with Experts
Libraries are hosting thought-provoking events to discuss the implications of AI:
- Boston Public Library — In July 2023, the library held a creative workshop for teens that was organized in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics. The workshop explored AI’s benefits and risks to help prepare younger generations for a tech-driven future.
- New York Public Library — In September 2023, the library welcomed experts to explore how AI governance can address global challenges such as inequality, privacy and human rights. The NYPL event highlighted the importance of global collaboration in shaping the future of AI policy.
- Queens Public Library — In March 2022, the Queens Public Library partnered with NYU’s Center for Responsible AI for a “We Are AI” learning series. The program was designed to educate people about AI technologies and advocate for ethical AI policies.
- Skokie Public Library — In March 2024, the library organized an event for parents that focused on AI in education, and experts shared strategies for parents on how to navigate conversations about AI with their kids.
And for those who prefer audio learning on their own, the Broward County Library hosted “Tech Talk Weekly,” a podcast that featured updates on AI and tech trends.
Courses and Workshops
Libraries are also making it easier for people to learn about AI in practical ways through targeted courses and interactive workshops:
- Brooklyn Public Library — In October 2023, the library held a hands-on workshop where participants learned how to enhance their resumes and cover letters using ChatGPT.
- Contra Costa County Library — In January 2024, the library held a workshop around how AI could be used for genealogical purposes, including restoring old photographs and creating digital family history books.
- San Jose Public Library — In November 2023, the library offered a course that introduced attendees to machine learning and ChatGPT to help patrons better understand AI’s real-world applications.
- San Mateo County Libraries — In Summer 2023, the library partnered with Women in AI Ethics to host a program that supported marginalized communities with accessible AI learning resources. Classes helped community members gain a solid understanding of AI and prepare for new opportunities in the AI economy.
