2018 MLK Day Community Mural Project

Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Ill.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

The library collaborated with a Newcomer Center for immigrant students and a local artist to create an opportunity for students and community members to connect and share stories around the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, inspire understanding and create a mural together for the community.

Challenge/Opportunity

Immigration is a hot topic. This program brings different demographic groups together to create art, exchange ideas and, most importantly, build positive connections around Dr. King’s legacy that transcend individual characteristics and experiences. Each event participant now has a positive new personal experience to frame their views on immigration in America, and the community has a lasting tribute to the experience with the community mural and a video capture of the experience.

Key Elements of Innovation

The vision for this program came from a local high school with whom the library has a long-term relationship. The library has dedicated staff and resources to inspire understanding in our community, and for this project adapted Harwood Institute community engagement principles. With this community project, we celebrated MLK day in a way that was tailored to our community and particularly impactful for all who participated or see the mural.

Achieved Outcomes

Community members of all ages came to share their stories, meet neighbors and contribute to a community mural. In addition to bridging demographic divides, the project resulted in beautiful artwork that hung first in the library then our Village Hall for several weeks prior to making its way to its permanent home at the local high school for new young immigrants. This permanent fixture serves as a reminder that our shared community aspirations overcome any differences.
