A Dynamic Partnership for Adult Students

Los Angeles Public Library, Calif.

Education - Children & Adults | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

Many adult school students lack library cards and are unaware of resources to support their education, work and family success. Therefore, Los Angeles Public Library and the Los Angeles Unified School District Division of Adult and Career Education (DACE) joined forces to add the library to the curriculum and issue every student a library card.

Challenge/Opportunity

Many adult school students do not have a library card and are unaware of the programs and resources available for their use at their public library. However these students are ideal candidates for public library services. From tutoring, language and citizenship programs available for English language learners to job resources, test preparation and vocational materials appropriate for academic and technical students, the library has innumerable resources that would prove invaluable for the adult student population.

Key Elements of Innovation

Students at two pilot campuses received a personal LAPL library card as well as fine amnesty on their past library accounts. Simultaneously, the students studied curriculum created by DACE specifically for LAPL. Librarians visited the schools and spoke to students and teachers in depth about resources of interest. Finally, teachers and students visited Central Library on field trips to experience the activities and innovation of this historic and thriving institution.

Achieved Outcomes

During the pilot phase of this program, LAPL distributed 8,271 cards to adult school students at two DACE campuses. Librarians conducted 15 class visits and spoke to 2,696 students about library resources. A total of 2,029 DACE teachers and students traveled to Central Library on field trips. We anticipate increased use of LAPL locations and resources by participating adult school students, and have plans to expand to additional campuses in the near future.
