Active Learning Center
Broward County Library, Fla.
Innovation Synopsis
Broward County Library opened its award-winning Active Learning Center in May 2017 on the second floor of the Main Library in Fort Lauderdale. The ALC is an educationally rich children’s play space that provides developmentally appropriate activities to promote school readiness in children from birth to five years old.
Challenge/Opportunity
BCL is dedicated to ensuring the educational playing field is equal by providing early learning/literacy enrichment for all. A report from the National Institute for Early Education Research states that children who enter school with basic knowledge of math and reading are more likely than their peers to experience later academic success. Broward County has private educational play spaces for children but they charge up to $15.99 daily. The ALC addresses this discrepancy.
Key Elements of Innovation
The ALC is the first free play space in Broward County offering developmentally appropriate activities that promote school readiness in children from birth to five years old. Designed to look like a seaside village, it provides opportunities to engage in activities that mimic the real world such as cooking and shopping. The ALC’s philosophy is that play is the work children do — the ALC helps children play their way to school success.
Achieved Outcomes
The ALC offers activities that align with the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Early Learning’s Developmental Standard, including those at different skill levels, allowing children to play-learn at their own developmental level. This gives children different ways to learn that range from hands-on activities to educational computer games to age-appropriate reading materials. The ALC received a 2018 Florida Library Association’s Youth Services Excellence Award and a 2018 National Association of Counties Achievement Award.
