AEP/PSO Foundation Digital Literacy Lab
Tulsa City-County Library, Okla.
Innovation Synopsis
TCCL's Digital Literacy Lab is leading the way in digital literacy services. In the lab, customers experience the latest software and technology-based learning to build apps, edit photos, digitize family memories, simulate flight and so much more.
Challenge/Opportunity
In October 2016, we reopened our Central Library after a three-year renovation. This complete remodel allowed us the opportunity to ask our community what a 21st-century library looked like to them. They told us it was all about technology. They wanted a space where they could learn new skills and try out the newest technology and software available. As a library, we know that digital literacy can be as critical to our community’s success as literacy itself. So we set out to build the community a high-tech space to learn.
Key Elements of Innovation
The DLL is leading the way into the 21st-century of library services. Dreamed and envisioned by the very community it serves, the DLL offers technology-based learning and digital skill creation to thousands across Tulsa County. In addition to providing resources for Central Library customers, the DLL takes programming off-site to outreach events, such as the Tulsa Maker Faire and tech events. We provide frequent orientations and a DIY Digitization in Action class, along with regular programs geared toward all ages.
Achieved Outcomes
Since opening in October 2016, the DLL has hosted:
- 41,894 visitors
- 990 flight simulator lessons
- 202 Book-a-Librarian appointments for 342 library users
- 350 programs with 5,828 attendees
Partnering with Techlahoma, we offer four coding workshops for women annually, and are the hosting location for 200OK, an annual state tech conference. We connect with educators and school/academic librarians to support student learning and professional development.
