One of the library’s current challenges is to raise awareness of our reimagined, 21st century library, which features diverse enrichment and entertainment options to its multicultural, all-age customer base. ArtLit 2019 provided the opportunity to engage the community by inviting them to participate in Broward County Library Reads; enjoy a free day of art, music and fun; celebrate the Pompano Beach Library’s anniversary and explore library resources and services including virtual reality gear.

2019 was the inaugural year of the Broward County Library Reads reading project, and the creation of ArtLit 2019 as its kick-off event was the project’s key innovation. Additional elements include artists creating literary-based chalk murals, live bands performing, a dramatic performance that was simulcast for outdoor Festival goers and the demonstration of virtual reality gear such as the MERGE Cube and Microsoft HoloLens. Broward County Library is currently the only U.S. public library to offer a HoloLens for public use.

The achieved outcomes of the ArtLit Festival included approximately 4,200 people in attendance. At the event, library staff conducted a survey of attendees, and 72% of those who responded were “extremely satisfied” with ArtLit. ArtLit was also covered by local print media, including a feature in the area’s Spanish-language newspaper of record, which increased awareness of both ArtLit and Broward County Library and its services/resources. Due to the success of ArtLit 2019, a similar festival has been planned for 2020.
