Austin Public Library Television
Austin Public Library, Texas
Innovation Synopsis
Austin Public Library Television streams book recommendations, associated videos, weather and announcements and information about accessing library programs, materials and services to the high-definition public displays throughout the Central Library. The displays use video-over-IP technology to distribute live video as well as curated and scheduled library information.
Challenge/Opportunity
The library attracts users with different needs for accessing the vast collection of books, digital resources, public programs and meeting spaces at the library. APL TV assists in the challenge of keeping the public aware of library resources —suggesting specific ways to engage with the library, both individually and within the community of ideas. Utilizing reusable, dynamic displays instead of printed materials helps Austin with our sustainability goal of creating a bright, green future.
Key Elements of Innovation
APL TV extends the library's Drupal-based content management system.
Librarians import metadata — such as book covers, titles and descriptions — then use this granular content to build recommendation slides consisting of books, CDs, DVDs or other items. Content administrators then queue up recommendation slides along with wayfinding help and promotional screens to comprise thematic playlists. APL TV maintains 16 channels of streaming playlists, with each display in the library tuning into a channel relevant to its vicinity.
Achieved Outcomes
Digital signage offers the advantages of lower costs, easier updates and the ability to show video and sequences of contextually relevant content. The displays are colorful, attractive and engaging. Utilizing dynamic displays as much as possible, rather than relying on paper and vinyl printouts was a deliberate decision — the ease of use and high degree of customization makes the digital signage solution a clear winner with regard to cost, staff time and sustainability.
