Autism Accessible Browsing Hour

San Antonio Public Library, Texas

Health & Wellness | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

San Antonio Public Library implemented Autism Accessible Browsing Hour in response to a need expressed by a customer. Staff consulted a Board Certified Behavior Analyst specializing in autism. On selected dates, the library is open for one hour after closing time, and the environment is modified to be more welcoming to individuals with autism.

Challenge/Opportunity

Individuals with autism may be distressed by a visit to the public library. It is reputed to be a place with high expectations for quiet, and conditions may vary on a given day based on programming, other individuals visiting the facility, maintenance activities and changes in staff. The library environment might be overstimulating or not stimulating enough. The first visit to a place like the public library could be very difficult for family members as well as staff and other patrons.

Key Elements of Innovation

In Fall 2019 a parent approached a library employee about bringing her child with autism to the library. The employee independently sought resources to learn more about autism and possible barriers to library access for families impacted by autism. Library staff coordinated to identify one library location to pilot Autism Accessible Browsing Hour. Staff received autism awareness training and planned temporary modifications to the library environment to be more comfortable for individuals with autism.

Achieved Outcomes

San Antonio Public Library facilitated two Autism Accessible Browsing Hour events. The lights are turned off and natural light comes in through large windows. A study room is set aside for calming, in case a family needs to have a moment away from the crowd. Play dough, gel boards and other sensory materials are provided. The staff is ready to assist in locating materials to borrow or using library computers. Forty people have attended the two events, and others have inquired about the next event to be held July 2019.
