Autism Spectrum Disorder Sensory Toolkits

Vaughan Public Libraries

Education - Children & Adults | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

Vaughan Public Libraries has introduced a suite of resources that aims to support families in our community by providing a variety of tools, games, books and services that specifically aid children with sensory processing challenges. These resources can be used to promote and support a diversity-rich and inclusive environment.

Challenge/Opportunity

VPL's strategic plan demonstrates a commitment to providing life-long learning for all, as well as providing an inclusive library community that empowers people with disabilities to live safe and meaningful lives. It is our responsibility to provide an inclusive and accommodating space for those with disabilities, and we feel that there is a lack of resources for those with disabilities in our communities. Now more than ever, we must continue to expand our reach to underserved and vulnerable segments of the community.

Key Elements of Innovation

VPL began offering a suite of resources: circulating games, books and multimedia kits; in-library use toolkits; and integrated in-branch resources. These include a sensory kit for programming use, light-up tables, liquid floor tiles, magnetic wall gears, fidget bands and more. Circulating materials can be easily requested on our online catalogue website by searching for “autism tools” or “sensory resources” and include a variety of games and multimedia to help children improve their focus and process their emotions.

Achieved Outcomes

These tools and resources empower staff and customers to better assist children and youth with special needs. We hope to facilitate positive associations during library visits while helping children acclimatize to the library space. These resources will also give our customers an opportunity to try out products that might otherwise be cost prohibitive. Customer feedback has been positive, and VPL plans to integrate more resources to improve accessibility and inclusion for people with disabilities in our libraries.
