The first three years of life lay the foundations for brain development, physical development and healthy relationships. In recent years, Bexar County had the highest infant mortality rate among major Texas counties and 23% of children younger than 18 live in poverty. SAPL connected 800+ Baby Day attendees with community resources to support babies and their caregivers.

The first statewide Baby Day event was held in various Texas communities in 2019. SAPL, with leadership from the Little Read Wagon early literacy team, partnered with First Three Years to bring the February 15 event to San Antonio. Staff from multiple SAPL teams united with community experts on nutrition, health and early childhood development to create a day of bonding, learning and play. The event used outdoor space and three floors of SAPL's Central Library.

Attendees engaged together in classes on baby sign language, infant massage, toddler yoga, Baby Time and Toddler Time programs, and infant and toddler nutrition. Caregivers had the opportunity to consult individually with health care workers about immunizations, child development and safe sleep. Open-ended play was encouraged with spaces that invited attendees to explore light, color, texture, balls and ramps. The culminating event of the day was a toddler-friendly DJ dance party.
