Bards & Brews
Birmingham Public Library, Ala.
Innovation Synopsis
Bards & Brews is a monthly spoken word poetry performance and beer tasting event hosted by the Birmingham Public Library. The wildly popular open mic performances makes BPL the Adult Poetry University for our community. The event space rotates between library branches, local bars and other city departments.
Challenge/Opportunity
Bards & Brews was originally funded by an Alabama Humanities Foundation Grant and during 10 years it has become the most success signature program at BPL. Presentation opportunities have provided our patrons with entertainment and a cultural art experience. In addition, these events give local artists a platform to deliver their work to the community. There have been many first time poets perform at Bards & Brews who have boosted their popularity within the city.
Key Elements of Innovation
Bards & Brews is a live show where audience members may perform at the microphone or recite original or published poetry. The elements of innovation combine collaboration with everyday people, multiple organization in the arts community, theater performers and local university community. The infusion of poetic expression and adult beverage makes this program a prime community venue for adult expression. Imperfection is always welcomed as poetic groom their skills growing together.
Achieved Outcomes
The mission statement for Birmingham Public Library is to provide the highest quality experience to our community for lifelong learning, cultural enrichment and enjoyment. The Bards & Brews program is the perfect match of people, poetry and fun. At least once a month, Bards & Brews drives the desire to intermingle cultures and people while appreciating poetry and sampling local beer. Last year, these adults-only events had over 2,000 visiting patrons. We are planning to take Bard & Brews to Alabama Public Television.
