Beautifully Branded: Library Templates Made Easy
Free Library of Philadelphia, Pa.
Innovation Synopsis
Staff has had their wish fulfilled! To a round of applause, our graphic designers introduced beautiful, branded, easy-to-use program templates. Eliminating the wait for original designs — and empowering librarians to work with brand fonts, stock and rights-free images, and pre-populated location and contact info — we have transformed our print process.
Challenge/Opportunity
We are a public library system with 54 locations. Though we delight in the uniqueness of our neighborhood libraries, we need to position ourselves as a cohesive system with a recognizable library look. Our two immensely skilled graphic designers cannot provide flyers for the 30,000+ programs that we offer each year, nor do we want to encourage individual local efforts. How do we achieve a professional print appearance with only two specialists and a vast and growing clientele comprised of our staff and public?
Key Elements of Innovation
We convened and listened to staff as they described the difficulties of submitting design requests two months before a program (that is often scheduled only a few weeks out). We communicated the need for consistency in library branding. Then, we experimented with software and design and iterated with a small group. Recently, we launched Template 2.0 with in-person training, written support and FAQs, half- and full-page design options, an image bank, social media and online calendar recommendations, and printing options.
Achieved Outcomes
Since Template 2.0 premiered in December 2018, original design requests have decreased by 47%. The use of templates during that same period has grown to 376 jobs (with 141 in May 2019 alone) with an average delivery time of four business days after submission. Our designers now have time to work on exhibitions, system-wide marketing campaigns and the special programs that require original effort. Concurrently, staff receives beautiful, branded flyers quickly and our public sees clear and consistent library messaging. Win!
