Book Deliveries for Toddlers with Delayed Speech

Wichita Public Library

Education - Children & Adults | 2024

Innovation Synopsis

Wichita Public Library recently partnered with Rainbows United, a large early intervention service organization to provide library book bundles that are delivered to the homes of families who are receiving speech and language skill building support.

Challenge/Opportunity

While studies show that reading improves a young child’s speech skills, many families receiving speech services in Wichita and Sedgwick County do not have books or access to books at home.

Key Elements of Innovation

More than 150 bundles of board books are provided by Wichita Public Library and delivered by Rainbows United’s Early Intervention Specialists during home visits. The books are then returned to Rainbows to then go out to another family.

Achieved Outcomes

Since this partnership began, Wichita Public Library has seen increased engagement and reading between caregivers and children, increased awareness in library services, and tons of positive feedback from participants. The Library is also tracking the children who participate to see if their speech skills improve. If so, dedicated resources will be provided that will encourage them to continue with this program.
