Broward County FLLIbrary
Broward County Library, Fla.
Innovation Synopsis
The Broward County FLLibrary is a satellite library featuring the latest in streaming media technology that opened in June 2019 at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Located between Terminals 3 and 4, it’s an innovative space where passengers can get free digital music and movies from the library’s collection via a QR code.
Challenge/Opportunity
In 2011, Broward County Library partnered with the airport to broadcast a QR code directing travelers to free online library materials. Since then, the library launched other initiatives that deliver free access to library services in non-conventional locations. In 2018, seeking opportunities to reach visitors/non-residents, the library again partnered with the airport to extend and enhance library services at FLL. An additional challenge was providing free services that didn’t compete with existing airport vendors.
Key Elements of Innovation
FLLibrary’s key element of innovation is its location between terminals in one of the fastest-growing airports in the U.S. The FLLibrary is a dedicated space with comfortable modern furniture where passengers can relax, recharge their devices and get free downloadable/streaming music and movies “on the fly by scanning a QR code located on the wall.” The name is a combination of the airport's signature “FLL” call letters and the word “library.”
Achieved Outcomes
One of the anticipated outcomes for the FLLibrary is an increase in usage of the library’s online music and movies overall and a measurable increase in their usage at the FLLibrary, as well as an increase in awareness of free library services available to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport visitors. Achieved outcomes include local media coverage and attendance at the June 2019 grand opening event.
