Innovation Synopsis

By moving our reading program virtual, CML reached many isolated students during the pandemic. Since fall 2020, Reading Buddies has provided over 4,500 sessions of virtual reading practice. CML worked to assure ease of access, provide technical support and deliver a 1:1 reading experience to help elementary students improve reading skills.

Challenge/Opportunity

As a result of COVID-19 school closures, student education occurred mainly online. Many families struggled to support educational needs outside of school hours including reading practice needed to build literacy skills. In addition, library closures made it challenging to access books. As experts in connecting people with books, the library seized an opportunity to provide reading practice to kindergarten–third grade students virtually using electronic books available through CML’s website.


Key Elements of Innovation

Beginning fall 2020, CML offered access to reading practice through our website. Sessions were initiated by simply texting or chatting, “I want to read today.” Library staff answered inquires by sharing a Zoom link and offering technical support. Next staff would screen share, access leveled books and assist students in finding a title of interest. A shared reading experience allowed staff to assist students with literacy skills such as fluency and comprehension along with a social connection during an isolated time.


Achieved Outcomes

Between August 17, 2020 and September 29, 2021, CML completed 4,552 virtual reading sessions. We anticipate continuing and growing this service during the current school year. Expansion is now possible due to the growing number of volunteers assisting. Overall, customer experience has been positive. A caregiver survey completed in September 2021 indicated growth in student reading skills, increased interest in reading and a willingness to continue to use the service.
