Innovation Synopsis
Career Coaches in Residence is a pilot program that offers career and job search help for younger adults through remote one-on-one consultations, workshops and programs. Especially during a challenging labor market, TPL worked with community partners to provide customized support to better meet the career and employment needs of younger adults.
Challenge/Opportunity
Unemployment rates among 18-29 year olds in Toronto are among the highest in Canada, even pre-COVID-19. Young adults in particular find navigating the labor market confusing and difficult. Community consultations revealed that young adults need career navigation services but are often ineligible for them due to factors such as citizenship. The Career Coaches in Residence program provides a vital information service that helps younger adults find career clarity as they navigate the ambiguous world of work.
Key Elements of Innovation
During the appointments, experienced career coaches provided individualized career plans and advice based on participant needs, interests and skills. Coaches also worked with library staff and community employment agencies to connect participants with relevant career resources and opportunities available through TPL and the community. This program uniquely positions the library to holistically help younger adults navigate the current uncertain labor market, especially those facing multiple barriers to employment.
Achieved Outcomes
During the 20 week pilot in fall 2020 to spring 2021, coaches provided over 460 one-on-one appointments and hosted programs for 770+ attendees. By mid-pilot, all appointment slots were fully booked and a waitlist was created, demonstrating a clear demand for this program. Our participants found the sessions very helpful and indicated that they felt better prepared for the workforce after attending the program. As one participant notes, "I was feeling lost, but now feel more confident about my next career steps".
