Caring for Community During COVID-19
Pima County Public Library, Ariz.
Innovation Synopsis
When Pima County Public Library closed its doors to the public on March 18, 2020, staff jumped at the opportunity to provide much-needed support to other Pima County departments. Deploying dozens of employees to participate in COVID-19 recovery work, the Library helped cover vital positions throughout the county.
Challenge/Opportunity
When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, like many libraries nationwide, PCPL followed local directives to close our buildings. Many business and services shut down, which meant many Pima County residents were without jobs, homes, and vital services needed to survive. Traditionally, the library would be a resource for people, but the county and the library had to find a new way to support the community.
Key Elements of Innovation
Dozens of staff deployed to county departments, supporting law enforcement, care facility administrators, and tribal liaisons. Some took on administrative roles, facilitating the use videoconferencing and natural language transcription. Others worked on the front lines—taking temperatures, delivering gloves to food banks, and transporting doses of Remdesivir for distribution to hospitals. Some staffed referral programs for vulnerable populations, like connecting those experiencing homelessness to safe hotel rooms.
Achieved Outcomes
In this case, it is essential to look at qualitative outcomes: sense of pride in stepping up during a challenging time, forging deeper connections with Pima County departments, and perhaps most importantly, continuing to serve our customers in every way possible beyond library doors. Participating staff members did not hesitate to put themselves on the front lines and demonstrate to the community that, when they’re needed, they’ll be there.
