CLOUD901: Teen Mobile Info Hub (TMIH)

Memphis Public Library & Info Center, Tenn.

Innovation Synopsis

The Teen Mobile Info Hub is an extension of the CLOUD901 teen learning lab. It is a custom pop-up display unit that travels to outlying branches. The pop-up has furniture, technology and accessories. This summer it will visit and present five free STEM summer camps in neighborhood branches.

Challenge/Opportunity

After CLOUD901 opened in September 2015 in 8,300 square feet at the Central Library, it became apparent that these experiences should be shared with teens in Memphis who experience transportation challenges. The Library contracted with a designer to create a mobile lab that could be collapsed, moved to other locations and re-assembled. The result was the TMIH. It has been sent to locations around the city, including schools, educational fairs and community centers. Teens and library staff enjoy working in the pop-up!

Key Elements of Innovation

CLOUD901 was the result of a two-year, $2 million capital campaign to transform 8,300 square feet into a technology lab exclusively for teens. It is one of the largest in the country, with the latest digital equipment, as well as accommodations for art and music disciplines. Approximately 150 teens visit the center daily. The idea to extend the programming to other locations offers the Library the ability to leverage its staff and equipment to meet the great demand for teen services in Memphis.

Achieved Outcomes

This summer MPLIC is offering eleven free summer camps featuring music production and art to STEM and coding. Five of these programs will be at outlying neighborhood branches. The TMIH has served as an extension of an exciting new library resource for Teens, enabling the teen services staff the ability to conduct outreach and present mobile programs.
