Collins Garden Branch Library Extreme Makeover

San Antonio Public Library, Texas

Innovation Synopsis

Collins Garden Library underwent six months of renovation during an Extreme Library Makeover. Upgrades included expanding the library by 800 sq. ft., renovating restrooms, installing new carpet, painting walls, adding computers, and creating dedicated spaces for children and teens. The Council 5 District office was also relocated to the branch.

Challenge/Opportunity

The surrounding Collins Garden community is composed mainly of married couples with children and single-parent families. They search for information that will help save money, get the most of services and products, and care for their family. Most are under-educated, and work in blue collar or service jobs. They look for diversions and recreation after a hard day’s work. The renovations to the Library enhance the very walk-able, family-friendly environment of the neighborhood. The Council 5 District field office co-location at this branch better serves the community by making it more convenient to access library and constituent services.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Collins Garden Branch Library is an anchor service to the surrounding community. It is across the street from the only grocery store in a three-mile radius. The branch is adjacent to the park and an elementary school. Across the street is a very active church. Independent retail and offices serve as an entrance to the neighborhood. It was important that the branch renovations provide a welcoming community gathering space, access to information, computers, and training. The space was also redesigned to provide a comfortable place to work or study while utilizing the Wi-Fi services.

Achieved Outcomes

The partnership between the Library and the Council office makes it more convenient for members of this community to engage the Councilwoman’s office. The new spaces of the Library offer a flex community space, dedicated Teen and Children’s areas, a maker space, and an increased number of public computers. There is more opportunity to search for jobs, connect with loved ones, access other public services, and more. Since the makeover, total circulation of materials has increased ten percent, Library cards issued from the branch has increased 33 percent, and computer and WiFi use has increased an incredible 77 percent.
