Community Garden
Baltimore County Public Library, Md.
Innovation Synopsis
Three years ago, we planted raised beds to grow food for our local food bank. With staff and volunteers working together, we donate about 130 pounds of food each season. We’re proud to work with the community to give to those in need.
Challenge/Opportunity
We partner with several local organizations. When we first approached Catonsville Emergency Assistance, we asked what their greatest need was. They told us that they have plenty of nonperishable food donations in colder months, but struggle to fill their pantry in the summer. We did some canned food drives, but wanted to find a way to offer fresh food to CEA clients.
Key Elements of Innovation
Growing food for those in need appeals to library customers and community members. We have students from local schools assist with planting, then use the garden as a STEM learning tool for children’s programming all summer long. We encourage family participation with planting, growing and harvesting.
Achieved Outcomes
CEA loves having options for their clients, and the clients enjoy having access to fresh produce and herbs. Local families are able to contribute to those in need in a real, hands-on way. Children get an opportunity to learn about growing food and participate in community service. We look forward to offering this program for years to come.
