Community Wellness Liaisons
Salt Lake County Library and Salt Lake City Library, Utah
Innovation Synopsis
A partnership funded by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, including libraries in Salt Lake City and County, and the Eccles Health Sciences Libraries, to meet the health information needs of diverse communities and develop a model for other libraries. The project is managed by the CCET at the University of Utah.
Challenge/Opportunity
Because public libraries are a trusted source of valid health information, we recognize a need to build into our services a holistic model that covers the seven domains of health which include physical, social, emotional, intellectual, environmental, financial and spiritual. Our underrepresented diverse communities need and desire to be more connected to libraries, develop an understanding of libraries and see themselves reflected in the makeup of libraries.
Key Elements of Innovation
Our libraries worked with Community Faces of Utah to train and hire Community Wellness Liaisons (CWLs) who could connect to African Refugee, Native American, Pacific Islander and Latinx communities to share health information, a stronger knowledge of libraries and the resources we offer. CWLs were recruited from the identified communities to ensure they had shared language and experience. The CWLs worked with branch staff to complete diversity and inclusion training to understand the barriers these communities face.
Achieved Outcomes
NNLM’s research shows that CWLs were effective at making libraries more inviting to diverse community members. Community leaders shared that individuals in their communities are more aware of library programs and health resources. Libraries saw an increase in library cards held by members of diverse communities. Surveys indicate that library program attendees had a positive experience, desire more discussions about race at future events and feel better able to take care of their health.
