Convening Youth to Create Inclusive Communities

Innovation Synopsis
Recognizing many young people were growing increasingly disconnected and feeling a loss of control during a pandemic and protest movement, Pioneer Library System engaged civic partners to initiate and foster conversations among youth — tackling crucial topics, combating isolation and encouraging activism in safe and inclusive environments.
Challenge/Opportunity
Oklahoma’s youth felt helpless and disconnected during this pandemic and time of civil unrest. In response, civic leaders sought ways to encourage positive change and create a more inclusive community. A city youth summer camp held in a low-income middle school struggled to keep campers engaged as outside presenters were prohibited and the camp lacked equipment to host virtual events. The library elevated and connected young voices through a series of community conversations.
Key Elements of Innovation
The library convened civic leaders and young citizens in meaningful discussions about representation and diversity. Teens directly dialogued with the mayor and leaders across the state, addressing local racial and social injustice through literature. Staff helped youth explore social issues in a safe space, identify current issues such as homelessness impacting the city and learn about local activists. The library engaged youth in public discourse with peers and community leaders in collaborative and respectful ways.
Achieved Outcomes
These library events lifted over 30 young voices and continue to make an impact toward creating an inclusive community. Youth identified crucial issues and ended summer with a personal activist goal to pursue. Library staff and the mayor shared book discussion experiences with libraries across the state, inspiring others to create similar series. Amid these events, the mayor formed a community task force with library representation to explore alternative policing models, currently being discussed by city council.
