COVID-19 Stories Exhibit

Markham Public Library, Ont.

Advocacy & Awareness | 2020

Innovation Synopsis

Markham Public Library’s COVID-19 Stories Exhibit is a community memory journal that uplifts local voices of all ages and captures the day-to-day changes brought on by the pandemic.

Challenge/Opportunity

The large scale nature of the pandemic left limited space for local voices to be heard. Markham Public Library set out to provide a participatory platform for community members to share their stories and reflect on the experiences of others. The first call for submissions was publicized in early April and, since then, the exhibit proudly houses over 100 stories in various formats, including poems, short stories, social media posts, musical performances and much more.

Key Elements of Innovation

The stories historicize experiences of uncertainty and provide a community outlet for stress and anxiety, all while combating social isolation. Contributors affected by the digital divide shared their stories with staff over the phone which were later transcribed and uploaded to the exhibit. The participatory exhibit utilizes known stress-relieving aspects of journaling to help process emotions and thoughts, while helping the community understand that everyone is going through a confusing and difficult time.

Achieved Outcomes

At the onset, Markham Public Library asked for submissions of written and visual personal stories that explained how the pandemic has changed day-to-day lives. The submissions quickly surpassed the criteria of personal accounts and entered the realm of creative writing, artistic expression and journaling. The youngest author is only four years old, while the most senior author is 95 years old. MPL’s COVID-19 Stories Exhibit is home to over 100 stories from local voices of all ages.
