Coworking Center

Miami-Dade Public Library System, Fla.

Workforce and Economic Development | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

The Coworking Center provides enterprising customers with a place to telecommute, conduct business and grow as entrepreneurs. It is also a place to work, collaborate on projects and network with like-minded individuals. As a place of learning, the Center offers many programs and activities geared to personal/professional growth and development.

Challenge/Opportunity

The Coworking Center was created to fill a growing need for a flexible and accessible work space in the community. It came about as the result of a study conducted in 2016 that surveyed the interests of the users of the West Kendall Regional Library and community residents. The input obtained was key in the design of the space and the development of the current program.

Key Elements of Innovation

The room’s straightforward design uses movable furniture to give its users the ability to customize the space to their needs. The events and programs offered in the Coworking Center form the backbone of the service. This orchestrated structure of workshops series and monthly special events sustain and enhance the collaborative and educational nature of the space. Workshops offered include: Business 101, Branding your Skills, Business for Teens, Cloud Computing, Job Hunting & Interviewing Skills, etc.

Achieved Outcomes

The Center’s user community has been growing steadily from the onset of the program. In the past eight months alone, over 860 individuals have participated in the workshops and special events offered at the Coworking Center. Networking among the users of the space is a common occurrence. User interests, as expected, do vary widely — from flight school students wishing to collaborate on flight plans to entrepreneurs wanting to learn how to best use social media.
