Creative Aging Program

Cambridge Public Library, Mass.

Education - Children & Adults | 2019 | Honorable Mention

Innovation Synopsis

CPL offers eight-week courses for adults aged 55+, centering on the arts. Taught by certified artists and instructors, this program provides participants with opportunities to learn new skills and further develops the library as a center for lifelong learning. This year, we offered courses in the Art of Storytelling and Poetry Writing.

Challenge/Opportunity

The goal of the Creative Aging Program has been to establish CPL as a center for lifelong learning and create important and meaningful learning experiences. It also provides social opportunities for older adults looking to make new connections after retirement. In addition to Storytelling and Poetry Writing, past courses have also included Basics of Drawing, Writing Memoir and Basics of Dance.

Key Elements of Innovation

Partnering with Lifetime Arts, a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of older adults through arts education, CPL established a framework for a responsive program for older adults. The process began with professional development for all library staff and board members to increase awareness of ageism and learn to work with older adults. The project involved gathering community input on their interests and selecting instructors with experience in engaging older adults in addition to their artistic skills.

Achieved Outcomes

All classes were filled to maximum capacity and received positive feedback. Participants showed visible progress in social engagement with their peers and developed connections beyond the classroom. Participants exhibited pride in their accomplishment and a transformation in their self-confidence at the culminating event showcasing their new talents and skills. We also successfully worked with our funding partner, the Cambridge Public Library Foundation, to secure funding through a continuing anonymous gift.
