Digital Collections
Sonoma County Library, Calif.
Innovation Synopsis
Sonoma County Library revamped its Digital Collections by moving to a new and improved platform — Quartex — the first public library in the nation to deploy this platform. Patrons can now easily peruse local history, culture, art and more, in searchable articles, photos and stories.
Challenge/Opportunity
The previous Digital Collections platform was in use for nearly 10 years and had certain limitations, including a cumbersome search function. The new Digital Collections is a one-stop platform for discovering the library’s digital resources. With Special Collections branches closed to the public for most of the year due to COVID-19, patrons were unable to use resources in person. Sonoma County Digital Collections provides an updated experience that accomplishes many of the tasks patrons might visit the library for in-person.
Key Elements of Innovation
Sonoma County Digital Collections is hosted on a redesigned and updated website, allowing easy searches including handwriting recognition. This includes Archival Collections guides; videos, audio, digitized texts and transcriptions; historical research guides and thousands of digitized historical photographs from the library and partner organizations; and hundreds of videos, audio recordings and e-books. Digital Collections also allows users to research wine literature, history and local authors and books.
Achieved Outcomes
Sonoma County Digital Collections is easier than ever to use and enjoy, with broader and greater capabilities. Many new features are planned for the future. By expanding and improving Digital Collections, the library is reflecting the needs and preferences of the community and providing necessary information, resources and educational opportunities. This new virtual space is anticipated to provide education and experiences that spark lifelong learning and help community members succeed as citizens and learners.
