DIY Video Programming for Adults
Sonoma County Library
Innovation Synopsis
During the pandemic, when many Sonoma County adults felt isolated and disconnected, Sonoma County Library created a video DIY series to provide connection and entertainment to adults who counted on library services for connection. We tapped into staff expertise and interests to educate and entertain with humor and empathy.
Challenge/Opportunity
When the pandemic hit, many lost jobs, faced financial pressures and became isolated. Many adult in our communities who relied on using the library for computers, education, entertainment and connection, no longer had access to that lifeline. SCL staff fielded dozens of calls from adults in the community looking for information, resources, or just someone to talk to. When SCL staff was able to begin virtual programming, we looked for ways to provide the connection that was missing for many in our community.
Key Elements of Innovation
We used CollectionHQ data to identify areas of the library collections with high circulation during the start of the pandemic, and used that information to select topics for video content. We planned a 12-episode series of DIY videos, and invited staff at all branches to contribute at least one video to the series, based on individual staff expertise and creativity. Our graphics team created series branding, and we developed a new workflow for creating video content for virtual programming.
Achieved Outcomes
Our first anticipated outcome was for isolated community members to feel connected with the library and staff. The series’ 19 episodes gathered more than 2,500 views, and feedback showed that patrons greatly appreciated the human connection with staff. A second anticipated outcome was to offer staff opportunities to exercise creativity and learn new skills. The variety of different topics recorded speaks to the staff’s exploration of this new medium; one staff member even created a 10-episode arc on her topic.
