Drive Thru Voter Registration

Forsyth County Public Library

Advocacy & Awareness | 2021

Innovation Synopsis

FCPL has always made voter registration materials available to library users, but the pandemic necessitated we change the way we interact with customers.

Challenge/Opportunity

Voter registration assistance is best handled face to face so customers can be provided with the official form they need to register. We did not want to invite patrons to gather indoors at an information table due to the precautions we have in place because of the pandemic. This is our second National Voter Registration Day in a row where we set up an information table and computer in our one-way parking garage to assist patrons as they drove past, without having to leave their cars.

Key Elements of Innovation

This is not an election year in our county, which makes voter registration no less important, but certainly more relaxed. Our county has shifted due to redistricting and people have continued to change residences, move to Forsyth County and turn 18, underscoring the need to ensure that voter registration status is up to date even during a nonelection year.

Achieved Outcomes

We received a lot of verbal support and thanks for having Drive Through Voter Registration from people coming through the garage. Noteworthy help was provided to a person who was not aware that forms and assistance with navigating the Board of Elections website could be found at the library. We will have a Drive Through event again in the spring, targeting teenagers who will turn 18 by the next general election in 2022.
