EVPL + COVID-19: Accessibility of Resources
Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library, Ind.
Innovation Synopsis
The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library recognized the need for continued and expanded access to library services at the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. With a focus on ensuring accessibility of resources in a time of pandemic precautions, EVPL shifted several aspects of its customer experience to meet the needs of our community.
Challenge/Opportunity
With the introduction of COVID-19 in our region, EVPL closed all locations for a period of seven weeks. During this period, library staff innovated new ideas and concepts to expand existing contactless services and pivot previously high-contact services. Recognizing our communities need for educational support, employment assistance and enrichment opportunities, EVPL shifted its resources to meet these community needs.
Key Elements of Innovation
EVPL To Go expanded to all locations with certain locations extending operating hours. Potential materials borrowed and borrowing periods were increased. Our summer program was held completely virtually and included a call-in option for those without internet access. In-person programs shifted to digital platforms. Business Central was reintroduced with a new digital resource center and the hiring of a business librarian. The e-access card initiative was expanded EVSC students in grades 3-12, providing digital material access.
Achieved Outcomes
In our first week of expanded curbside services, we had 1,777 users and 7,971 materials circulated. Nearly 1,000 individuals participated in EVPL’s summer reading program, and more than 500,000 minutes were read. We held approximately 200 programs with more than 92,000 unique viewers and an estimated reach of nearly 300,000. EVPL is a resource for employees and employers throughout the community. With the expansion of the e-access cards, more than 17,000 students now have access to EVPL’s digital materials and resources.
