Fall Adventure Trail
Scottsdale Public Library, Ariz.
Innovation Synopsis
The creative energy of the youth staff at the Scottsdale Public Library produced a fun, interactive experience for young and old to combat the distance associated with COVID-19. To provide a positive experience for all patrons, staff created a “Fall Adventure Trail” on the sidewalk outside the library using sidewalk chalk.
Challenge/Opportunity
Interactions with patrons have been limited during COVID-19. Engagement with patrons — especially children — has been difficult. Although virtual programming has been offered, staff wanted to create an experience that would engage children in a fun, creative manner that was not screen-based. To encourage getting outside, yet still supporting literacy and learning, the plans for this activity came to life. The Fall Adventure Trail was created and brought to life by three tenacious and dedicated staff.
Key Elements of Innovation
Using what was on hand — sidewalk chalk — and the outdoor area near the front of the library, staff were able to form the foundation for an interactive obstacle course that celebrates the fall season. Their creativity and artistic abilities were brought to the forefront as they filled the sidewalk with interactive elements that support healthy growth and development in young children, all while supporting literacy. Each stop along the course incorporated directions so that families could engage in the interactive art.
Achieved Outcomes
The Fall Adventure Trail is a fun, added surprise that positively enhances the library experience for children and families. Families have the opportunity to visit and try out the obstacle course when they are visiting the library or just passing by. The children like to run the course over and over demonstrating the power of creativity in engaging children. The icing on the cake is seeing the adults also playing on the Fall Adventure Trail!
