First Launch of Hublets in North America

Sonoma County Library, Calif.

Equity and Inclusion | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

In late 2018, we began wireless tablet lending inside our branches. We were the first library in North America to loan Hublets, a cloud-based tablet. These tablets familiarize our patrons with new technology, increase computer use and take up little space in our busy branches. They are easily managed and promote digital literacy and reading.

Challenge/Opportunity

IT staff saw a need to provide new services to the library’s diverse population. A challenge in adding physical items to the library is the limited space in branches. New tech must fit into limited space. The Hublets are affordable, easily managed through cloud-based software and provide anti-theft software. Library staff were anxious to provide an optimal experience for library patrons, more technology access points in the library, access to current technology devices and access to the library's digital content.

Key Elements of Innovation

The Hublet is fully integrated into the library’s ILS, enabling self-service loans. With the centralized software management tool, library staff have control of the content, can centrally manage updates, set loan parameters and identify the user. The Hublet works in a pre-defined network and will cease working when outside of the defined Wi-Fi area. When the tablets are returned to the Hublet base, the tablet is locked into place, all end-user information from the previous user is deleted and the unit is recharged.

Achieved Outcomes

Using the Hublets in our literacy program provides patrons learning to read the opportunity to use the many available free reading and grammar applications available through the Google Play Store, along with pathways to citizenship applications available there as well. Using the management tools, the tablets can be configured to be used to aid library staff in work functions as well as outreach activities. The tablets can also be loaded with specific content workshops, literacy support and media education.
