Innovation Synopsis

In the summer of 2023, Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library (CHPL) partnered with multiple Kentucky libraries – Kenton County Public Library and Boone County Public Library – to soar to new heights with Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) by providing free books for their airport library. The airport library has been a huge hit with fliers!

Challenge/Opportunity

With 5-10 million visitors each year, the CVG airport provides a huge opportunity to reach new library users and for people to take a book with them on their travels. CHPL first spoke with CVG several years ago about having a collection, but it didn’t work out until 2023 when all three area libraries worked together to establish the partnership.


Key Elements of Innovation

The library systems and CHPL’s Friends of the Public Library continue to collaborate to ensure the book collection remains stocked for travelers all year long. To keep it easy for the busy traveler on the go, a library card is not required to check a book out of the library. When a reader is finished with a book, they can pass it on to another passenger, bring it back to the airport library as they make their way through CVG, or drop it off at a partnering library: Kenton County Public Library, Boone County Public Library, or the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library.


Achieved Outcomes

The partnership has provided more than 4,000 items since we started the joint venture in 2023. Each month, 400-500 items are delivered to stock the shelves at the airport. With the demand, it’s worked out for all three library systems and the Friends of the Library to be involved to keep the airport library well-stocked for all the travelers coming through our busy airport. The airport library has also gained a lot of fans based on engagement with CHPL’s social media. Through Facebook, Instagram and X promotion, the posts had a reach of 68,500+ and an engagement of 5,900+.
