Kentucky residents are allowed to take the GED test in Spanish; however, the state does not offer preparation classes taught in Spanish. Another nonprofit operated a fee-based program in a neighboring county, and we were able to partner, relocate and expand their services to Lexington Public Library in order to facilitate classes in a much larger Spanish-speaking community.

In response to customer demand from Lexington’s large Latino population, we discovered a small nonprofit providing Spanish GED classes 30 minutes outside of our community. Recognizing the higher demand in the Lexington area and the barrier of private transportation, the Immigrant Initiative rebranded itself and joined Lexington Public Library to offer free classes at two library locations. The Lexington classes are free, and we will soon offer vouchers for GED tests through grant funding.

Each weekly session averages 25 attendees. The group includes non-English speakers as well as individuals who prefer to learn and take tests in their native language. By the end of our first year, we anticipate 100 individuals will complete their GED and continue working toward their American dream.
