Go Kinetic with GoCreate

Wichita Public Library, Kan.

Education - Children & Adults | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

The Wichita Public Library has expanded opportunities for creator and kinetic learning through a partnership with Wichita State University’s GoCreate, a makerspace on the university’s campus. GoCreate brings equipment and mentors into the library and enables the library to offer classes on topics beyond the expertise of library staff.

Challenge/Opportunity

When the Advanced Learning Library was being designed, makerspaces were a new idea. By the time construction began, there were several in the community. Instead of duplicating these entities, the library collaborates with the most unique one in the city. Bringing GoCreate classes into the library fulfills the plan for maker activity and provides creators with access to tools and equipment beyond the reach of most DIYers while enabling GoCreate to increase awareness of the specialty resources in their on-campus space.

Key Elements of Innovation

The first key element of this innovation was demonstrating a willingness to collaborate with GoCreate, rather than to duplicate makerspace service already existing in the community. Creating a strategic partnership with the most robust makerspace in the community enabled the library to expand its relationship with the university and to bring high quality kinetic learning into the library without incurring the cost of additional staffing and equipment.

Achieved Outcomes

The anticipated innovation outcome was the presentation of kinetic learning opportunities in the Advanced Learning Library. The achieved outcome has been a robust schedule of hands-on making programming to enhance kinetic learning and creating as part of the service portfolio of the Advanced Learning Library. For the GoCreate makerspace, the opportunity to offer classes in the library has increased awareness of the community access opportunities this makerspace provides.
