Helping Hands: Kindness, Homeless Aid, Upcycling
Miami-Dade Public Library System
Innovation Synopsis
Helping Hands upcycles plastic bags into plastic yarn, or plarn , used to crochet sleeping mats distributed to homeless and migrant populations, promoting both collaborative engagement, original artistic expression and environmental sustainability. Since inception in 2016, the program has donated over 1,500 sleeping mats and experienced extraordinary growth, evolving from a modest project into a dynamic and influential force, emphasizing collective social responsibility. Inspired by their participation, participants committed to creating and distributing mats have formed their own groups, like Plarn Matters in Savannah, Georgia. This synergy of community involvement and creative exploration for the good of others highlights the significant, far-reaching effects of our project beyond a small library in Miami-Dade County.

Key Elements of Innovation
Beginning in 2023, the program expanded beyond traditional partnerships. By forging relationships with diverse sectors like businesses, museums and international faith-based organizations, the initiative's impact has expanded far beyond local boundaries. Participant diversity has led to new populations benefiting from our unique creations. In the Philippines, patient’s families who must sleep outside of the hospital will soon be getting these cushioning mats. For the first time the project evolved to include art installations and collaborations with fashion brands, showcasing the versatility of plarn. Through the collaboration with Sabah Shoes, NY’s Shaker Museum held an auction where one mat raised $600 donated to Miami-Dade’s homeless community. Helping Hands demonstrates the transformative power of innovation, compassion and the simple act of turning discarded plastic into hope.
Achieved Outcomes
With zero cost and 10 trainer-volunteers, transforming single-use plastic has provided community service opportunities to students, youth, community and cultural organizations, and corporate partners. The group combines civic action with social and environmental issues. Library outreach expanded to underserved populations while fostering civility and collaboration. Burgeoning alliances include an international design firm, a global footwear brand, an art installation at NY’s Shaker Museum and a display at Miami Beach's Standard Hotel. Bespoke items raised awareness and funds for the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa. The project motivated a priest in the Philippines to teach plarning to the poor and displaced, imparting valuable life skills. Locally, the group teamed with Terra High School to create trashion dresses from plastic waste, illustrating the program's drive to engage people of all ages in addressing social challenges and promoting sustainability.
