Fort Vancouver Regional Library District, Wash.

Equity and Inclusion

Innovation Synopsis

Homeless Not Hopeless" was a month long art show that showcased artwork done by local homeless artists. The work included both 2D and 3D works displayed throughout the public areas of a five story urban library. The library is proud to unveil the show in a newly created building-wide display space.

Challenge/Opportunity

The Vancouver Community Library implemented the "Homeless Not Hopeless" art show in an effort to build awareness that many homeless people are creative, caring, contributing members in our society. The brainchild of a local homeless jewelry maker, the show was a way to share talents and aspirations of some of our homeless patrons with the community at large who may not have had the opportunity to see the homeless population in a positive light.

Key Elements of Innovation

Homeless Not Helpless" consisted of 30 pieces of artwork created by 13 local artists who are currently experiencing or recently experienced homelessness. Art media included paper and pencil, acrylic and oil paint, wood carving and burning, sculpture and handcrafted jewelry. A local art gallery matted many of the pieces, non gratis, for free, which added a touch of professionalism to the work and allowed us to more easily hang some of the more challenging works.

Achieved Outcomes

Lack of affordable housing is a key issue facing our community, causing an increase in homelessness. Our intention with "Homeless Not Hopeless" was to build a wider understanding of people who are often overlooked, misunderstood or simply unwelcome through highlighting their creative contributions. The well-received reception included members of the community, homeless advocates, library staff, the local newspaper and several of the artists. Positive feedback and appreciation confirmed that we have reached our goal.
