Hour of Code Library Outreach Model

Miami-Dade Public Library System, Fla.

Education - Children & Adults | 2019

Innovation Synopsis

The Allapattah Library was accepted to participate in the ALA Hour of Code national celebration of Computer Science (CS) Week 2018 using Google CS First courseware. Circumstances required initiating flexible in-house programming and outreach to the local community in order to successfully, and creatively, accomplish project deliverables.

Challenge/Opportunity

The Allapattah Library was obligated to present programming as the deliverable for ALA’s CS Week mini-grant using Google CS First and as part of library STEAM initiatives during a transitional period. The programming responded to the challenge of “[I]ncreasing awareness of Library services and programs” identified during the MDPLS’ Strategic Planning process and addresses its goal to “provide extraordinary services and customer experiences with … programs and events that are easily accessible and desired by the public.”

Key Elements of Innovation

The Allapattah Library was temporarily relocated during the permanent building’s renovation. The library was slated to return to the permanent space prior to CS Week's celebration, but met with an unforeseen delay. The temporary space lacked adequate computer access and internet capabilities to accommodate multiple programs arranged, and therefore necessitated an about-face to garner expected audiences by conducting deliverables as outreach programs to educational and cultural institutions with computer teaching labs.

Achieved Outcomes

Library staff successfully presented six sessions (two in-house and four outreach programs) introducing computational thinking and coding to 101 participants. Outreach programs strengthened relationships with and increased library visibility to community and educational partners. ALA recognized Allapattah Library as a “Library of Promising Practice” for extensive and innovative community outreach presenting computational thinking and coding. Only 10 libraries of 245 participants were recognized and granted bonus funding.
