HPL FindIt: Library Smartmap Technology Innovation
Houston Public Library, Texas
Innovation Synopsis
Houston Public Library created a smartmap searchable directory of HPL locations, services and events. Houston is the fourth largest city in the U.S. and has the most diverse population of residents; new immigrants, visitors and HPL customers can easily search and find the library locations and services they need that are nearest to them from any internet connected device.
Challenge/Opportunity
With the ubiquitous adoption of smartmap technology, the idea was to create a smartmap searchable directory that would address some of the limitations with Google maps with respect to libraries and library services. From any internet connected computer or smartphone, customers can search the library locations nearest to them and services they offer including passports, ESL classes, yoga, internet hotspots, laptops, computer classes, etc. Customers can also search library events and classes by specific date.
Key Elements of Innovation
In 2017, HPL partnered with a vendor to use their GIS web platform to develop a library smartmap that would help customers find the locations, services and events closest to them and system-wide. This is a completely new approach for both HPL and the vendor to utilize smartmap technology for library services. To our knowledge no other library specific smartmap exists. The beta version of HPL FindIt was launched in Spring of 2018.
Achieved Outcomes
HPL FindIt provides customers with a graphical mapping app that can help them find the library locations, services and resources they need that are closest to them. Using this app customers can also discover other library services available to them at a location. Beyond library locations and services, plans are to expand this smartmap directory to include other city services and locations like parks, community centers and clinics. A marketing plan is being developed.
