Intersections Magazine
Forsyth County Public Library
Innovation Synopsis
Intersections magazine, which debuted in 2021 with three issues, is a way to show the library's significance to the community. The name reflects the idea of FCPL as a crossroads where people can come together. Each issue contains features that highlight community or library initiatives, resource or organizations with related library programs.
Challenge/Opportunity
County residents aren't used to thinking of FCPL as a system of ten libraries with broad resources. Staff tend to see themselves as part of standalone libraries as well. Intersections is helping to create more awareness of the system as a whole, as well as connectedness internally. In addition, many county residents still think of the library as "just books," not a place to help grow a business, learn to cook, see an art show, attend a discussion or get an online tutor for their child.
Key Elements of Innovation
The area FCPL serves is a classic mill town with strong divisions between race and class, and little common meeting ground, such as that provided by the library. Each issue highlights various library partners from a broad section of the community. The local daily newspaper is shrinking and there is less community news from trusted sources. The magazine is available in print and digital editions and is largely staff written with some contributions from partners.
Achieved Outcomes
Intersections is helping to solidify existing partnerships and is attracting new partners. Leadership Winston-Salem has asked to be featured and the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership features the magazine on its social media. We'll be monitoring analytics on our Issuu platform to track readership and keeping track of new partnerships and programs in the coming year.
