Jamaica FEASTS is part of the Jamaica NOW Action Plan, a $153 million dollar neighborhood initiative announced in 2015 by the de Blasio Administration, Queens Borough President Melinda Katz and NYCEDC. The 21-point strategic action plan aims to economically revitalize Jamaica, Queens by providing workforce training and small business support, initiating new mixed-use development anchored by affordable housing and improving the livability of the neighborhood through investments in safety measures, green spaces and more.

Queens Public Library conceived of the idea for Jamaica FEASTS, and pursued and won a grant from NYC’s Economic Development Corporation to bring the program to life. The 12-week course combines classroom and hands-on training at an off-site kitchen at no cost to participants. Participants must undergo a rigorous application process. Once accepted, the program educates them to what is involved in starting a food business in New York City, from the city’s laws and licensing to marketing and creating a business plan.

Jamaica FEASTS has graduated 100 participants, many of whom were women and minorities who have launched 90 successful businesses. Participants have received Vendy Awards, Good Food Awards and have showcased their edible handiwork at some of NYC’s most prestigious food events, including the Queens Night Market. As a result of FEASTS’ success, QPL received $375,000 this spring from EDC to double the number of FEASTS of programs, and offer it at three other Queens locations. It has been renamed Queens FEASTS.
