KCDML Record Label
Kansas City Public Library
Innovation Synopsis
Team Digital, a teen leadership group at the Kansas City Public Library’s Digital Media Lab (KCDML), created a record label complete with a music department, art department, and video/photography department in the summer of 2022. The teens received hands-on experience and completed a three-song project, album artwork, music video, and documentary.
Challenge/Opportunity
The teen members of Team Digital had enthusiasm but no experience in software such as Logic Pro, Photoshop, or Davinci Resolve, creating an opportunity for learning through hands-on workshops led by KCDML staff as well as industry professionals who volunteered their time. The teens completed their summer with an album, as well as resume building experience in recording techniques, song writing, beat making, mic placement, video editing, marketing, sound production, research, graphic design, and software navigation.
Key Elements of Innovation
Individual teens interested in art and music became a team by learning together and creating a 3-song album from concept development through song writing, performing, recording, producing, and uploading to social media; from cover art creation to marketing techniques; from filming to creation of a final music video with additional documentary footage. The teens developed all of the elements from scratch, resulting in a 21st-century, skills-based, action learning project with significant workforce development outcomes.
Achieved Outcomes
Each member of Team Digital stayed with the project all summer, attended all workshops, worked diligently to finish the project, and gained significant skills in areas of their interest. The dream of an album at the beginning of June was a reality by the end of July. An album release party allowed participants to showcase their work to family and friends and answer questions, acclimating them to public speaking. The music video drew 500 Facebook views in 2 days. Students continued coming to KCDML during the school year.
