Kindergarten Gear Up

San Diego County Library

Education - Children & Adults | 2024

Innovation Synopsis

The Kindergarten Gear Up toolkit for public librarians provides a comprehensive online resource for planning and implementing early childhood education programs. It includes features such as lesson plans, activities, book lists, and marketing materials, all searchable and customizable to fit specific local needs. The toolkit supports librarians in preparing children for school readiness through structured sessions involving music, books, and interactive activities designed to enhance early learning outcomes.

Challenge/Opportunity

The toolkit addresses the gap in school readiness for preschool-aged children, especially in areas where children do not participate in formal preschool programs. This lack of early educational opportunities can lead to lower achievement test scores, higher rates of grade repetition, and special education needs. The toolkit offers a structured 10-session program that equips public librarians with resources to enhance early learning outcomes. It provides lesson plans, activities, and book lists, designed to develop critical skills such as communication, fine motor skills, and early literacy and numeracy. By incorporating music, books, and interactive activities, the toolkit helps children develop the necessary skills for academic success while supporting caregivers through community-building and confidence-enhancing resources. This comprehensive approach ensures that children gain essential readiness skills, filling the educational gap before they enter kindergarten.

Key Elements of Innovation

What makes KGU unique and innovative is its comprehensive, accessible, and adaptable approach. It innovates the library field by transforming libraries into active early education centers, bridging the gap in school readiness, and fostering community collaboration. This initiative not only supports children's development but also empowers caregivers and strengthens community ties. The toolkit was developed in conjunction with early childhood development researchers at the San Diego State University's College of Education. Content for many of the activities was developed through a partnership with the Bay Area Discovery Museum. The project was funded by the State Library of California.

Achieved Outcomes

Indicators of Kindergarten Gear Up's success include improved school readiness among children, increased caregiver engagement, and strengthened community partnerships. Data metrics used to measure success include:

1) Child Development Metrics: Pre- and post-program assessments of children's skills in literacy, numeracy, fine motor skills, and social-emotional development.
2) Attendance and Participation Rates: Tracking the number of children and caregivers attending sessions and participating in activities.
3) Caregiver Feedback: Surveys and interviews to gauge caregiver satisfaction and perceived impact on their children's readiness for school.
4) Community Engagement: Number and quality of partnerships with community speakers and local organizations.

Feedback from customers and staff has been overwhelmingly positive. Caregivers appreciate the structured support and resources for preparing their children for school, while staff have found the program rewarding and impactful.
