Equity and Inclusion
| 2020
Innovation Synopsis
We are committed to building an inclusive culture that celebrates differences by engaging our community in learning about racial justice.
“It is important during this time in our community and our country to show that Richland Library and our community affirms the lives of our Black friends, artists, neighbors and colleagues.” — Melanie Huggins
Challenge/Opportunity
How can we:
- Engage in respectful conversations and provide racial justice learning opportunities in this time of divisiveness?
- Acknowledge systemic racism and build bridges forward?
- Do this when our physical locations are closed? (COVID)
As a trusted organization, we have a responsibility to take action and drive change. Building on a strong foundation of hosting brave conversations, our racial justice teams magnified and expanded our commitment, time and resources to focus on racial justice.
Key Elements of Innovation
In 2020, we:
- Facilitated 24 Let’s Talk Race conversations (public and staff). BIPOC attendees shared personal stories, many painful, while others learned how to become allies and understand privilege.
- Hosted racial justice programs and speaker series.
- Created www.RichlandLibrary.com/Race.
- Partnered with local Black artists to display their work on our Main Library exterior. All locations displayed BLM art created by staff.
- Required diversity training for staff and created an ERG focused on black lives.
Achieved Outcomes
- Facilitated Let’s Talk Race sessions for government partners, nonprofits, staff and the community.
- Host book groups (internal and external) that highlight racial diversity.
- Piloting a padlet for public conversations, sharing of thoughts and dialogue.
- Create and expand the #OwnVoices staff group to provide book reviews, lists and blogs.
- Form an internal EDI Council to review policies, processes and practices through an equity lens.
- Continue to build bridges, respond and educate our community.
