Library eCards and Online Account Renewal Service
Santa Clara County Library District
Innovation Synopsis
The Santa Clara County Library District created a groundbreaking online eCard application system in 2018, generating 31,000+ new eCard holders and increasing local digital equity. This was followed in 2021 by an online system allowing patrons to renew their library account, providing a 24/7 contactless method to keep accounts up to date and active.
Challenge/Opportunity
SCCLD, which includes 8 libraries and encompasses 1,854 square miles of Silicon Valley, strives for greater patron accessibility by incorporating new approaches utilizing technology. With a large territory, few locations and busy patron lives, SCCLD required a solution to provide greater opportunities for residents to easily join the library, particularly during the pandemic. We also wanted to remove barriers for existing patrons to remotely keep their account active and up to date, 24/7.
Key Elements of Innovation
The eCard platform allows residents to apply online and receive immediate approval and access to the online collection. SCCLD designed the system for applicants to create an account and easily add household members. To qualify, the backend will instantly verify if the mailing address is valid and within the library district. The online account renewal platform allows existing cardholders to keep their account up to date and active. To our knowledge, we’re the only library system to offer this convenience to our patrons.
Achieved Outcomes
SCCLD has generated 31,000+ new patrons during the pandemic using the eCard platform out of 438,000 total district population with 75% in district cardholders. eMaterial circulation grew by 52% and 80% YOY. The first of its kind library card renewal program enabled 4,350+ to conveniently update their library accounts online from late June through October. We project with additional marketing we will see even higher usage rates moving forward. SCCLD’s technical innovations will benefit many library systems and patrons.
