Library programs don’t always reflect the communities we serve. Library Takeover offered our library a chance to increase community organizing and event skills of people in Madison who are not connected to a nonprofit organization or institution, while elevating our goals of expanding literacy and equity. We also used it to test our new Equity Analysis process, which helped us reconfigure some of the program’s structure and budget.

Library Takeover invites community members to apply to host a library event. Selected teams receive an event budget, a team stipend and guidance and library staff support. 2017 events included a discussion/dance party highlighting accessibility, a networking opportunity for writers and a celebration of Indian American contributions to Madison. Events in 2018 include a support group and wellness fair for women of color, a local radio launch and a storytelling event from Madison’s Muslim community.

With over 54 applicants in two years, we see a strong desire for community involvement in library programming. After past Library Takeover events, program participants continue to be engaged with the library. We have seen increased conversation and collaboration in adult library programs, and benefit from offering more diversity in programming. One participant said, “It's amazing to be able to take an idea and have it be taken seriously/validated.”
