Library's Racial Equity Partnership

Anne Arundel County Public Library, Md.

Equity and Inclusion | 2018

Innovation Synopsis

Anne Arundel County Public Library is committed to a leading role in promoting diversity and inclusion in our community. We supported the county executive’s Anne Arundel United campaign by linking their work to our numerous multicultural initiatives and providing a site to host difficult conversations.

Challenge/Opportunity

After a racially charged incident in our community, the county executive started the Anne Arundel United initiative to provide education and support in the community for addressing these issues. By working with county leadership, we were able to share our many resources and move the initiative forward. Because we are perceived as a neutral organization, we instill trust in our customers and are able to encourage dialogue and compromise.

Key Elements of Innovation

We host monthly AA United’s Ambassador Coffees to encourage communication between community leaders, stakeholders and citizens. Discussions have been about active shooter threats, transgender restroom rights, addressing racist activities at a local high schools and the impact of the opioid epidemic. We have also supported AA United at schools and community events, providing resources for information and support to residents who are impacted by prejudice and lack of opportunity.

Achieved Outcomes

The county is now more aware of the role that the library plays as a convener of the community. The most impactful outcome has been hosting an Ambassador Coffee at a branch after racist graffiti was found at a high school next to the library. We were able to facilitate a peaceful conversation between the school leaders, parents and law enforcement to calm the anxiety that was flourishing and help develop positive steps going forward.
