Listen Inn Experience: Reimagining Dial-a-Story
Alameda County Library
Innovation Synopsis
Listen Inn, birthed from the moon’s desire to connect with humans below, is an audio outpost where anyone can find comfort, solace and joy. Using human’s stable technology — the telephone — a portal was created. Gaze to the heavens, reconnect with kindness and moments of pause in the Listen Inn. Visit again when you see a new or full moon in the sky.
Challenge/Opportunity
AC Library’s value statement — Kind, Connected Humans — inspired us to create accessible lo-fi pandemic programming to bridge the digital divide in our diverse communities. In reimagining the traditional dial-a-story, we sought to connect with library members of all ages using creative and intimate audio experiences including poetry, music, multilingual stories, oral histories, cross-cultural traditions and original works from staff and the community. Anyone can access the service by dialing toll-free 833-990-BOOK (2665).
Key Elements of Innovation
- Available on-demand 24/7, listeners can leave anonymous messages in the guestbook for an interactive experience and to offer feedback.
- To encourage spontaneity and observation of the world around us, content updates are set to full and new moon cycles.
- Developed a novel use of a telephone routing system with the ability to upload custom audio files, update frequentlynand reporting features.
- Prototyped a recording studio with user-friendly equipment and open-source editing software.
Achieved Outcomes
- Steady listenership with members of all ages leaving messages in response to the pieces they heard; and now follow the moon and anticipate new material, an indicator the unique scheduling is understood and appreciated.
- Cross-department collaboration among staff “Innkeepers” created original content.
- Designed retro motel keychains and magnets for guerilla marketing in our communities. We are currently building Arduino driven, interactive rotary phone experiences to rotate through libraries and outreach events.
